Day 1: Heading South to Amarillo Texas

  • In Last Chance Colorado we were stopped by "Gil", a local rancher who's wife realllly wants to buy a Mini Cooper. We both gave some honest advice, and suspect Ralph Schomp of Littleton should be getting a new customer.

  • GIANT Wind Mills!!!!! There must have been over a hundred of them stretching as far as our eyes could see. Amazing. Dad was Don Quixote and I was the loyal side kick, what was his name?
  • Driving down the road it occurred to me that our family are very much like the early inventors of the 1800's, Tesla and the like. Instead though we are exploring the realms of reality and energy. This felt very inspirational at the time, crossing the giant quiet expanses with wind mills spinning about!
  • Got a bit of fuel in Limon and some good 'ole dishwater coffee:-)
  • Passing the Sand Creek Massacre site, I wonder if the earth remembers the emotions of those who dwell upon it.
  • Had the best meal of the day at "Wiley's Diner" in Wiley Colorado! A real short order cook, she talked so fast I needed a tape recorder to catch it all! Chicken Fried Steak Burger, it surprise us too, and a Deluxe Cheese Burger with Potato Salad.
  • We just stopped in Springfield, CO and took pictures in front of the BACA County court house where Dad got his drivers license. He took a test and drove around the court house! He was telling me how he lived their when he was about thirteen to seventeen years old.
  • Down the road from the court house was where the old saloon used to be. Otis Vale went to that saloon when his wife passed on. That night he bought the whole town drinks till everyone was several sheets to the wind and having a grand time. Otis said that was the way his wife would have wanted it. Otis's wife also bought two tomb stones and put them over their fire place!!!
  • I am sorry to report the giant beehives are gone :-( Dad thinks maybe it was a "Beautification" project by the state. Huh. So we decided some rock out cropping were probably dinosaur droppings!
  • Making it into Boise City, wow did this bring back stories. The circle, (the drug store was taken down), Grandma and Grandpa's place, drove past Barbra and Joe's old place, and also the old ranch that they moved into town! Also the grade school Dad when to:-)

  • Heading out of town Dad wanted to stop at "Chuck's Place", he grew up with Chuck. It was here that we met Chuck, who knew Barbara really well( think he had a bit of a crush on her), and Dad's cousin Sandy. Wow was it great seeing Boise City again.

  • Texas turned out to be a beautiful drive and right about dinner time we stopped at "The Cowgirl Cafe". It was full of good food, and a whole lot of local color! The life story of a man who moved to Channing after a rough divorce, a man who from all over, and seemed to have a infinite numbers of daughter that he was visiting that summer. The last two had white beards down to their chests. The first claimed it was because his boss never gave him a chance to go to the barbers, and the second told us that if god had intended his face to be smooth as a baby's bottom then we would have grown a beard. Piercing blue eyes.

  • Made it into Amarillo with the setting sun. This motel is super fancy, thanks Mom, the beds are perfect as well. Night!
